More than 22 million Americans visit chiropractors annually. There are many reasons you would visit a chiropractor including neck pain, headaches, pain in the hips and extremities, and wellness visits. But lower back pain makes up roughly 40% (or 8.8 million) of all chiropractic visits. The American College of Physicians or ACP is recommending spinal manipulation as a nondrug, nonsurgical way to treat chronic lower back pain. If you are having back pain, here are some reasons to try a chiropractor.
- It’s Natural: Chiropractors help patients move without drugs or surgery. In one study, injured workers were 28 times less likely to undergo spinal surgery if they saw a chiropractor first
- It Works: In 2017, the American College of Physicians recommended chiropractic as a first-line defense against low back pain. Patients are satisfied with their care and highly recommend it to their friends and family. Also, after four weeks of treatment, chiropractic patients were found to be more satisfied with their back care than primary care patients.
- It’s Growing and Regulated: Out of the complementary and alternative medicine professions (or CAM), Chiropractic is the best known, largest, and most regulated. With the use of chiropractic tripling in the pasts two decades, it is the fastest growing CAM profession. CAM patient surveys show satisfaction with chiropractic care is very high and used more often than any other alternative provider group.
- It’s safe. Chiropractic care is safe. Even newborns get adjusted to correct the spinal trauma from the birth process. Chiropractic care is specific to each patient’s health needs.
- It prevents return pain: Pain causes people to exercise less, that in turn makes the low back pain even worse. Regular chiropractic care with exercise can prevent back pain from returning.
